Easy Ideas for Modern Kitchen Wall Decor

It’s a bit humorous to write up a post on modern kitchen wall decor and have so many ideas inspired from years past. As is the nature of design, everything comes back doesn’t it!?

Our kitchens are the heart of our homes, so it’s important to create a welcoming and inviting space that we truly love. If you’re anything like me, you’re in your kitchen at least 60% of the time you’re home.

Maybe you have an empty wall (or two) that you’ve been staring at for too long and need some fresh ideas. My friend, you’ve come to the right place. Today I’ve rounded up 12 easy modern kitchen wall decor ideas that will easily add charm to your kitchen. Let’s get into it!

12 KITCHEN WALL DECOR IDEAS:

1. Add nostalgia and warmth with a fun gallery wall.

You can truly let your personality shine here! The beautiful thing about the vintage, maximalism style that is coming back is that it is incredibly personal and looks different for everyone. Round up art and photos that mean something to you or that you love.

Feel free to mix and match frame styles and sizes. Get wild with this one!

For a curated look, collect frames from local thrift and antique stores. A great way to do this is to measure each frame and make paper cut-outs of each so that I can perfectly arrange them before hanging. See how this can be done here.

2. Bring in functionality and beauty with a pot rack.

Pot racks will NEVER go out of style for me. They are way too functional, beautiful, versatile, and perfect for a small kitchen. They look effortlessly stunning against a bare wall.

I do not have very much cabinet storage, so the pot rack in our cooking space is my saving grace for easy storage.

I love how Lostine mixes metals with brass hooks and black rack. However, the options are ENDLESS here and you can make it your own to match your kitchen decor.

Great amazon options for under $50!

3. Add charm with vintage art.

Many think art is just for the living room, and in the modern kitchen, that’s just not the case! The kitchen actually the PERFECT place to sprinkle in art and make real impact! Adding vintage elements into a modern kitchen is a perfect contrast and helps to create a modern, inviting, lived-in space all at once.

I’d suggest looking for art that fits the overall feel and scheme of your kitchen. Foolproof ideas are usually related to food, landscape, and florals. But the sky is the limit and you should not feel limited. Let this speak to your personality and exemplify what you want your home to feel like!

This also gives the perfect opportunity to sprinkle in bright colors.

*For a dramatic look, consider creating a whole wall of art. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different shapes and sizes!

4. Fill an empty wall space (or an entire wall!) and create extra storage with a hutch.

Not only is the modern-day hutch functional, but it’s stunning! These are perfect for displaying and storing dishware and curated items.

Warm woods, glossy paint finishes, and mixed metals is what I’m seeing most often with modern kitchen hutches.

5. Display handwritten family recipes.

This is next on my list for our kitchen. I love the sentimentality and meaning of this.

If you’re like me and do not have any handwritten recipes from family, reach out to parents, grandparents, etc. and ask them to write down their favorite family recipe for you!

I love how Julie uses stunning gold frames against a blank wall, and a matted photo frame to give the recipe a place to shine. This is an easy way to add charm.

6. Display pots, pans, and curated items on a peg wall.

Yes, a peg wall for modern kitchens! These have been around for a very long time, but like I said earlier… everything comes back!

A peg wall is perfect for storage space and hanging various kitchen items, kitchen utensils, and decorative objects that you might need readily on hand. Perfect for holding curated items and natural elements that bring simple beauty into your kitchen while saving your counter space.

There is a variety of finishes (wood pegs, metal, etc.) that can change the overall look to fit your kitchen best.

A great option for modern kitchen wall decor that suits long OR short walls that may need a little something.

7. Bring in organic, rustic charm with a cutting board display.

I just love the warmth and functionality of cutting boards/serving boards on display. And this  is one of the easiest ways to fill a blank wall!

Ideally, you’ll want to aim for varying sizes, shades, and textures. This can be done with a pot rack, shelving, or simply thoughtfully hanging them on the wall as the last example shows.

8. Display your cookbooks!

Talking about modern kitchen ideas… Cookbooks are a natural part of your kitchen, so naturally they will be in style always. Consider displaying them for ease of use and beauty!

This can easily be done through the use of open shelves.

9. Display photos, art, and cookbooks with cozy photo ledges.

What better way to showcase who you are in the heart of your home than to have your memories on display? A perfect way to bring in color, warmth, and a bit of nostalgia.

And the great thing is that the sky is the limit here – make it your own!

10. Add texture and color with a bold wallpaper.

Wallpaper can be truly transformative in the best of ways when done correctly. It can create a sophisticated focal point for your kitchen space. The perfect splash of color might be just what your kitchen needs.

11. Decorate with large art and unique lighting.

Do not underestimate the power of large artwork in your kitchen. This is one of the best affordable ways to make instant impact. The right piece of art can truly set the tone for what your want your kitchen to be and showcase your personal style!

Sprinkling in a unique light(s) above or around can help to tie everything together.

12. Showcase your spices with a beautiful DIY spice rack.

Displaying spices in your kitchen can add a lived-in warmth that is both functional and beautiful.

Not only does it help to fill any awkward/empty spaces, but it helps make cooking a breeze.

13. Create a plate wall!

Plate walls were popular in the 1950s and 60s, but have never truly gone out of style. Plates in the kitchen? That’s never out of place. But these are definitely BACK in a big, charming way!

Display family heirlooms or simply add lots of vintage character to your modern kitchen.

Modern kitchen wall decor looks like many things! What I love most about what’s “in” right now is that we are heading into a trend of personal style and color. Fill up those empty walls (or don’t!) with things that make your kitchen feel like you!

Until next time,
Courtney
