IDEAS FOR HOW TO MAKE A KITCHEN COUNTERTOP:
Here, I will be sharing a list of ideas for DIY countertops that you can physically make yourself. So while I will not be giving tutorials, this will hopefully help spark an idea!
1. DIY Wood Countertops
Wooden countertops are a GREAT choice for adding warmth and character to your kitchen. In my opinion, wood countertops are timeless and will never go out of style.
This makes the top of my list because you can truly CREATE countertops where there are none. You can create your own wood countertops using supplies such as wooden boards, wood glue, and a circular saw.
You’ll start by deciding on your aesthetic. The type of wood matters, as softer woods like pine can give a more rustic feel, and harder woods like maple or oak are a bit more modern while providing durability for heavy use. The stain/sealant color of the wood also plays a part in how modern or rustic your project leans.

Start by cutting the wooden boards to size using a circular saw. Use wood glue and a biscuit joiner to join the boards together, creating a flat surface. For added stability, you will reinforce the underside of the countertop with construction adhesive and MDF. Once assembled, you will sand the edges of the countertop to smooth out any rough spots, and apply a finish such as a first coat of wood stain.
2. Laminate Countertops
Laminate countertops are a classic and cost-effective option that can absoltely be DIY’ed. These are a great option if you’re looking for a durable, budget-friendly solution that mimics the look of natural stone. Most big box stores, such as Home Depot and Lowes, will always have laminate in stock.
Laminate countertop choices has come a long way in terms of beauty throughout the years! There are so many modern options now that truly look like marble and other popular stone countertop choices.

Measure your existing countertop to determine how many sheets of laminate you’ll need. Use a circular saw to cut the sheets of laminate to the appropriate size. Apply contact cement to both the underside of the laminate and the countertop surface, then press the laminate onto the countertop. Trim the excess laminate with a trim router to achieve straight lines and a smooth finish.
3. Concrete Countertops
For a more contemporary look, you can consider making your own concrete countertops. Concrete is a durable material that can withstand heavy use, making it a great choice for kitchen countertops. Concrete countertops offer a beautiful look that pairs well with both modern and industrial-style kitchens.

Mix the concrete and pour it into the mold, ensuring that air bubbles are minimized by tapping the sides. Once the concrete is set, sand the surface for a smooth finish and apply a sealant to protect it from stains and water damage.
4. Epoxy Resin Countertops
Another great, affordable option for getting the look of high-end stone! Epoxy resin countertops allow for a high level of customization, letting you achieve the look of marble, quartz, or even a unique design of your own creation. Epoxy resin countertops are perfect for those looking to create a statement piece in their kitchen!

Allow the epoxy to cure, then apply a second coat if necessary.
5. Butcher Block Countertops
Butcher block countertops are a favorite for those who love the look of natural wood. They’re durable, easy to maintain, and add a timeless appeal to any kitchen. You can purchase pre-cut butcher block from a local hardware store or big box stores like Home Depot, OR make your own by joining together pieces of wood (as we discussed above).
