What is Coastal Grandmother Home Style?

Hello friends! If you’re here, you’re probably searching coastal grandmother home style. What is this, you may ask? Think Diane Keaton’s kitchen in Something’s Gotta Give or Meryl Streep in It’s Complicated. It’s neutral, cozy, coastal, welcoming, and charming all wrapped into one. Traditional homes that promote gardening, cooking amazing food, listening to soft jazz, and curling up with a good book. Lived-in and beautiful.

“Coastal Grandmother” is not a new style in the sense that this traditional look has been around for a while. BUT, it’s a new style in the sense that it’s recently been brought to light and coined by TikToker Lex Nicoleta. Lex describes the coastal grandmother aesthetic as a lifestyle, such as home decor, food choices, music, hobbies, etc. Much like that of the ladies you see in Nancy Meyer movies.

Turns out, a lot of us have been in love with the coastal grandmother vibe for a long time, and just didn’t have a name for it!

I think what I love most about the style is how comforting, classic, eclectic, and non cookie-cutter it is. So let’s break down the coastal grandmother home style, shall we?

WHAT ARE THE ELEMENTS OF COASTAL GRANDMOTHER HOME STYLE?

1) NEUTRALS

Soft neutrals serve as the base, but pops of welcoming color are scattered throughout.

2) NATURAL MATERIALS

Think beams, baskets, wooden kitchen utensils, wood cutting boards, etc. The coastal grandmother kitchen is filled with practical and beautiful items for whipping up an amazing meal!

4) WARM WOODEN ELEMENTS

Traditional, warm wood pieces are key for a coastal grandmother home. End tables, photos frames, wooden chests, armoires, dressers. You get the idea!

5) PATTERNS & POPS OF BLUE OR GREEN

An easy way to add pattern and color is to incorporate it via throw pillows, blankets, and rugs. And as we see in example two, even wallpaper!

6) VINTAGE, MEANINGFUL ELEMENTS

Mix vintage art and family photos in an eclectic gallery wall that means something to you!

7) BOOKS AND UNIQUE LIGHTING

So much of this look is creating a truly inviting space. Bookshelves filled with books and soft, unique lighting. I love the use of vintage wall sconces in so many of these examples.

8) ALWAYS, ALWAYS FRESH FLOWERS

And let’s be honest, a baked good in a cake dome just doesn’t hurt!
