Homemade Handprint Ornaments

Ingredients needed for this:

1 cup flour
1 cup salt
1/2 cup water

How many ornaments does it make?

Depending on how big of ornaments you are making. I found that using a small bowl to make ornaments (around 4 inches in diameter), I was only able to make around 4 ornaments. So I doubled this recipe to make 6.

Instructions:

  • Pour flour and salt into a large bowl
  • Blend these two together
  • Stir in water
  • Kneed the dough and form into a solid ball
  • Lay out a piece of parchment paper & transfer the dough
  • Place another piece of parchment paper over top and then roll it out to desired thickness (I chose to make mine a little thicker so that handprints would stand out a more – probably 1/4 of an inch thick).
  • Once you have your dough rolled out, you are free to get creative and cut your shapes! (I chose to use a small bowl to cut circles large enough for my 3 year old and 10 month old’s handprints).
  • Transfer shapes to a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  • Make little handprints in the dough 🙂
  • Remember to poke holes in the dough for hanging!
  • Bake at 200 degrees for 2 hours (less if you have smaller/thinner ornaments). Ornaments should be firm to the touch, and will continue to air dry even after baking.
  • To add dimension, I filled the handprints in with a gold sharpie. Gold paint would have worked better I’m sure, but I used what we had on hand!

So thankful for the memories that these create. I’m already excited to pull it out of the box next year to hang on the tree. Fun to make with the kids and make GREAT grandparent gifts!!
